The catchment area of the Colorado River is huge and its reservoirs and dams are among the largest in the world. The river itself has been threatened by drought, aridity and water extraction for many years.
The source of the Colorado River is in the Rocky Mountains, more precisely in the Rocky Mountain National Park. This is where "the colored one", as the river is called, rises not far from Denver in the state of Colorado.
It flows from the Rocky Mountains to Utah and Arizona and largely forms the border between Arizona and Nevada as well as the entire border between Arizona and California. The Colorado River then flows into Mexico and empties into the Gulf of California between the states of Baja California and Sonora.
