Useful information:
The Datteln-Hamm Canal is a federal waterway. It branches off from the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Datteln and flows parallel to the Lippe River until it reaches Hamm, where it ends at the Westfalen power plant. In addition to its original primary purpose of shipping, the Datteln-Hamm Canal also serves to supply Lippe water to the West German canal network.

The recreational use and sports boat tourism of the DHK have increased, with numerous anglers and even swimmers using the canal. The Hindus of the nearby Sri Kamadchi Ampal Temple in Hamm use the canal during the water ceremony at the end of the temple festival for washing and blessing.
