Useful information:
The Dortmund-Ems Canal (DEK) is a federal waterway that flows through North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. It begins at the Dortmund city harbor and ends at Papenburg where it joins the tidal river Ems. It belongs to the waterway class IV (European Class).

The Dortmund-Ems Canal has 10 canal locks, 5 Ems river weirs, and a barrier lock that is operated during high tide in the Ems.

The Old Ship Lift Henrichenburg in Waltrop is the most famous structure on the DEK. It allowed ships to overcome a height difference of 14 meters and is the oldest lift lock in Germany. Today it is a location of the Westphalian State Museum of Industrial Heritage.
