The IJsselmeer is the largest lake in the Netherlands. It was created by the construction of the 29km long Enclosure Dam, which separates the IJsselmeer from the North Sea. Since 1976, it has been divided into the IJsselmeer and Markermeer by an inland dike. The two lakes are connected to each other using 2 locks.
The lake is of great importance as a holiday area and is popular among water sports enthusiasts. In addition, there is a wind farm with 86 wind turbines on land and in the water in operation there.
