The Lahn is a right-hand, eastern tributary of the Rhine River in Germany. It flows through the states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate. It originates in the southeastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia on the border with Hesse in the Rothaargebirge mountain range, and empties into the Rhine River at Lahnstein. It is navigable for a stretch of 123 km up to Wetzlar. The Lahn River features 22 locks and 18 hydroelectric power plants that use the river for power generation.
Since 1981, the Lahn River is no longer used for commercial shipping. Apart from water tourism, it is popular among cyclists for the Lahn Cycle Route, and the Lahnhöhenwege (Lahn Heights Trails) attract hikers.
