The river Lek flows through the provinces of Utrecht, South Holland, and Gelderland. It originates near the town of Wijk bij Duurstede in the center of the Netherlands and empties into the Noord near the city of Kinderdijk, where the two rivers merge to form the Nieuwe Maas.
There are no major cities located on the Lek, but several historic towns: Wijk bij Duurstede, Vianen, Ameide, Nieuwpoort, and Schoonhoven. The largest city is Nieuwegein, whose historic core of Vreeswijk lies on the Lek.
