The Markermeer is a freshwater lake in the Netherlands. It was created in 1976 by the construction of the Houtribdijk, which separates the IJsselmeer and connects Enkhuizen with Lelystad. The Markermeer offers enough space for long day trips, yet the nearest port is never more than an hour away. A popular excursion destination is the eponymous island of Marken, which is connected to the mainland by a road. A side trip to Amsterdam is also possible from the Markermeer.
Even for experienced sailors, a trip on the Markermeer can be challenging due to the winds that can occur there.
