The Missouri River, also known as the "Big Muddy" because of its high mud content, is the longest tributary of the Mississippi River at over 4000 kilometers and the longest river in the USA, as it is longer than the river into which it flows.

Together with this stream, the Missouri forms the Missouri-Mississippi, the longest river system in North America and the fourth longest on earth.

Its catchment area covers around one sixth of the entire surface area of the USA. Together with the Mississippi, the river forms the fourth longest river system in the world.
