Useful information:
The Roanoke River is a river in the United States that runs through southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.
As one of the major rivers of the southeastern United States, it crosses a predominantly rural area between the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, the Piedmont Plateau and the coastal region. There it finally flows into the Albemarle Sound.
The headwaters of the Roanoke originate in the Blue Ridge Mountains and join in southwestern Virginia in Montgomery County near Lafayette.
The name Roanoke probably comes from the Algonkin language and means "shell money".
