Useful information:
The river is formed at Bafoulabe in Mali by the union of the Bafing and Bakoye rivers and forms the border between Mauritania and Senegal in its middle and lower reaches. It then flows into the Atlantic with a delta at Saint-Louis. It has been dammed several times to balance the water flow and is navigable as far as Kayes (Mali) during the rainy season.
