Useful information:
The Vechte rises in western Münsterland in Germany, crosses the Dutch-German border at Laar and flows into the Zwarte Water in the Netherlands north of Zwolle.

Due to the low water level of the Vecht in summer, the zompen were invented in the 17th century. These are a type of boat for transporting goods weighing up to 8.5 tonnes, with a very shallow draught of only 40 cm.

Today, thanks to its seven locks and barrages, it is navigable from its mouth at Zwolle to Junne, above Ommen, for ships with a draught of up to one metre.
